McDonald's Fired an Employee Who Decided to Do Something Nice

Heather Levia is a 23 year-old woman with twins; works 2 jobs, and is in nursing school.

She had worked there for 8 years, and then one day, a bunch of firefighters came in – they had just stopped a house fire in freezing temperatures – and they ordered some food.

Heather decided to pay the $83 bill herself, as a thank you to these firefighters for their service.

Then, another round of food was ordered by a different set of firefighters who had been working, and she asked McDonald's if they would cover the cost. She texted her boss this question:

The idea here was, you know, they give free meals to police officers time and time again; her boss said no, but because she didn't want these firefighters to have to pay, her and other coworkers paid for this second meal as well.

But of course, because no good deed goes unpunished, when the firefighters found out that it was Heather that was paying, and not the company, they complained.

And, when Heather came in for her next shift she found that she was fired. She was told that it was because she swore to her superior – which she denies.

In response to this, the owner of that McDonald's, Tom Meyers, released a statement which could be summarised by blah–blah PR bullshit, we respect the woman's privacy so we can't talk about why she was actually fired.

The good news and silver lining to the situation is it seems Heather has other job offers now, and of course she still wants to be a nurse. I have to say – with knowing several nurses – this woman will make a fantastic nurse. The difference between a nurse and a good nurse is just knowing that people would go out of their way to do good.
